Two feet to 20 feet or more

Retaining walls constructed by Stonescape Contracting range in height from two feet to more than 20 feet. Each requires precision placement and engineering expertise to ensure stability.

Retaining walls can transform a sloped yard into a terraced garden, stabilize a hillside, or reclaim otherwise unusable land by creating flat surfaces.

RETAINING WALLS

Evoking old-worlde charm, this series of terraced stonework retaining walls leads from the water to the house.

From functional to artistic, Stonescape Contracting Ltd. builds retaining walls that provide safety and stability on steep banks, while providing more usable ground on sloped lots. As shown by the mortared stone walls above, our retaining walls can also be works of art that enhance your property.

Segmental retaining walls are built from concrete block and are often used to provide stability and create flat surfaces on sloped ground. In Nanaimo, the steep slopes on which the city is built make retaining walls an essential part of many construction projects, either during construction or later, when a level surface is required. Stonescape Contracting has constructed retaining walls ranging in height from one foot to 30 feet. Retaining walls must be carefully engineered to hold back the hillside. Installations can also include steps and walkways.

Stonescape Contracting is certified through the Allan Block Corporation as a level II installer of Allan Block retaining walls. Certification for level III is currently underway.

Stonescape owner James Nantais reports demand for retaining walls is increasing as new developments are built on steeper slopes. The difficulty of installations is also increasing, making it even more important for installers to hone their knowledge and gain certification. "Each wall is basically an engineering design," James said.

Major retaining wall installations completed by Stonescape Contracting in the past few years include:

  • A 24-foot retaining wall at Woodgrove Mall which created a parking area
  • A 20-foot retaining wall for B.C. Ferries' Departure Bay terminal
  • Retaining walls which support the helipad for West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni
  • Retaining walls for the Mayfield at Longwood 230-unit residential development by Insight Group Development Corporation.

This combination of retaining walls and paver steps provides access, more usable yard space, and stability for a steeply sloped lot.
